Commandos find remote-controlled bomb - Khanabad

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan (3rd June 2011) An Afghan 5th Commando Kandak unit, supported by U.S. Special Operations Forces, recovered a remote controlled improvised explosive device at a possible RCIED training facility in the Khanabad district of Kunduz on Thursday 2nd June.

The troops were searching for an insurgent when they made the discovery. The device was subsequently destroyed.

German soldiers accused of killing Afghan woman

Police in northern Afghanistan have accused German Bundeswehr soldiers of killing a civilian woman and injuring another in an incident in Kunduz province on Wednesday 9th March.

"German soldiers patrolling in Durman area of Chardarah district started firing in the surrounding area," Gulam Mahidin, police chief of Chardarah district, told the German news agency dpa. "As a result of the firing, an Afghan woman was shot and killed and another injured." 

Mahidin said the woman was inside her house when she was shot in the head and killed, and that the German military had reported being under heavy fire.

"But according to our reports, there were no firefights and German soldiers made a mistake," he said.

The German Bundeswehr is investigating the incident.

Afghan Police chief killed by suicide bomber

KABUL: A suicide bomber jumped on the police chief of Kunduz Province on Thursday as he patrolled just 150 feet from his headquarters, killing him and two other officers, Afghan officials said. 

The governor of Kunduz, Mohammad Anwar Jigdalak, confirmed the attack, which also wounded the deputy police chief and seven others, including two civilians, in the city of Kunduz, the provincial capital.

Merkel faces questions over airstrike in Afghanistan

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her former Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier are due to answer questions on a military airstrike that killed dozens of civilians in Afghanistan in September 2009.

For over a year a parliamentary inquiry has been investigating the events surrounding the German-ordered airstrike in Kunduz, Afghanistan which killed more than 100 people and injured 11 in September 2009. On Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to face the inquiry's questioning.

All soldiers and politicians who participated in the decisions surrounding the deadly strike - including current Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg - have been questioned for hours, and slowly an overall picture of events is being rebuilt.

Afghanistan - Ten militants lay down arms

Ten Taliban militants have given up militancy and surrendered to government in Afghanistan's Kunduz province 250 km north of capital Kabul, an official said Monday.
