The demonstrations come after two days of deadly violence at similar gatherings, but officials promised a larger police and army deployment in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, to keep control. The protests in Jalalabad, the main city in the east, dissolved after several hours.

The desecration at a small U.S. church has outraged Muslims worldwide, and in Afghanistan it further strained ties with the West. On Friday, 11 people were killed, including seven foreign U.N. employees, in a protest in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

U.S Customs officer killed by suicide bomber

KABUL - A retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was killed and three other U.S. customs workers were wounded in a suicide bombing earlier this week in southern Afghanistan.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement released Tuesday in Washington that David Hillman, a retired customs officer who had worked for the U.S. government for 30 years, died in the blast Monday at the Inland Customs Warehouse in Kandahar.

Afghan police said the suicide bomber detonated a cache of explosives inside the city's customs house compound during a visit by NATO forces.

The Taliban in Kandahar are attacking officials and others who support pro-government forces. Earlier this month, a suicide bomber killed the province's deputy governor.

On Wednesday, a roadside bomb killed a senior district police official in the northern Balkh province, provincial police spokesman Sher Jan Durani said. Four bodyguards were also wounded when the bomb struck the vehicle carrying the director of criminal investigations in the province's Chimtal district, Noor Ahmad.

US troops killed in Afghan suicide blast

(AFP) – US soldiers have been killed in a suicide blast in southern Afghanistan's biggest city, Kandahar, along with an Afghan interpreter for the US military, police said Monday.

Khan Mohammad Mujahid, the provincial police chief for Kandahar, could not specify exactly how many troops died in the attack on the customs office in the city, which is seen as the birthplace of the Taliban.

But a spokesman for the international force in Afghanistan said he believed the number was "not high."

The attack is the latest in a string of bloody incidents to hit Kandahar, which has been the scene of a major anti-Taliban offensive by international troops.

Canada's hired guns in Afghanistan

OTTAWA - Canada spent more than $41 million on hired guns in Afghanistan over four years, much of it going to security companies slammed by the U.S. Senate for having warlords on the payroll.

Both the Defence and Foreign Affairs departments have employed 11 security contractors in Kabul and Kandahar since 2006, but have kept quiet about the details.

Now documents tabled in Parliament at the request of the New Democrats provide the first comprehensive picture of the use of private contractors, which have been accused of adding to the chaos in Afghanistan.
