Afghan police recruits graduate

KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 7) – Afghan Uniform Police recruits completed an eight-week basic training course with a graduation ceremony at the Joint Security Academy Southwest here, Feb. 3.

During the two-month course the students learned the techniques and skills necessary to become effective police officers.

“You’ve learned policing skills, you’ve learned combat skills and many of you have learned to read and write,” said Lt. Col. Marcus Williams, commanding officer, JSAS, during his graduation speech.

Williams said during the course the police officers learned how to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds. He also encouraged the policemen to take what they learned and work together with the locals in their villages to bring peace to Afghanistan.

“Put on your uniform and go to work for the country of Afghanistan. The people are counting on you to help bring peace and stability to this nation,” said Williams.

The JSAS commander expressed his desire for the AUP to help take control of their country saying that the Marines are here to help train and develop the skills required to be self reliant.

“To make this country peaceful it starts with you. It is your responsibility, not ours, said Williams. “We’ve given you the training and the equipment now it’s up to you to take charge of your country.” Williams emphasized to the police officers to take their jobs seriously because they have a difficult task ahead of them.

He also asked them to reflect upon the relationships they built with their Marine instructors.

“When you go back to your districts and your villages always remember that Americans are your friends we are here to help you not to fight you always remember that,” he said.

“I believe you are ready and I’m positive that you are going to go out there and make a difference.”
