British Gurkhas back in Afghanistan

A search operation in an area thought to be a Taliban safe haven has been carried out by soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) in their first major operation since recently arriving in Helmand province.

Operation TORA GORGA was carried out by soldiers from 2 RGR's B Company along with members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Police.

They searched a series of compounds near the village of Shin Kalay in Nad 'Ali district which had been identified as insurgent 'bed-downs' and used by insurgents to launch ambushes from.

The operation began with the ISAF and Afghan forces first searching people on a nearby bridge used as a key crossing point by locals, before moving on to the compounds.

UK to reduce Gurkha Brigade size

KATHMANDU, 4th April - With a view to restructuring its forces and to ensure that they are sufficiently flexible and adaptable to meet the demands of an uncertain future, the British Government has announced that it is going to reduce the size of the Gurkha Brigade by 700 by 2015.

Lone Gurkha fights 30 Taliban - and wins!

Sergeant Dipprasad Pun has been honoured for single-handedly fighting off 30 Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

The Gurkha soldier got through more than 400 rounds of ammunition and an assortment of grenades during his extraordinary one-man stand on the roof of an isolated sentry-post.

At one point, when his gun could no longer fire, Sgt Pun resorted to battering one Taliban fighter, who was trying to scale the wall to attack him, over the head with the tripod of his machine gun.

Prince presents medals to Gurkha soldiers

The Prince of Wales has presented campaign medals to Gurkha soldiers following their six-month deployment in Afghanistan. 

As Colonel in Chief, Prince Charles met troops from 1st Btn. Royal Gurkha Rifles at Sir John Moore Barracks in Folkestone.

The battalion completed its tour of duty working with Afghan National Security Forces in November.

It lost four of its members in Afghanistan in July and October.

Major James Joshua Bowman, Lt Neal Turkington and Cpl Arjun Purja Pun were killed by a rogue Afghan soldier on 13 July, and Rifleman Suraj Gurung was killed in an explosion while on patrol in Nahr-e Saraj on 2 October.
