Tears as three heroes are saluted in Wootton Bassett

Hundreds of people united in their grief yesterday as the bodies of three British servicemen killed in Afghanistan within three days were repatriated. 


The bodies of Lance Corporal Martin Gill, of 42 Commando Royal Marines, Corporal Michael Pike, of 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and Rifleman Martin Lamb, of 1st Battalion The Rifles, were flown into RAF Lyneham.

British aid worker Linda Norgrove gets postumous award

AID worker Linda Norgrove, who died last year after being kidnapped in Afghanistan, has received a posthumous Green Star award from the UN and Green Cross International.

The 36-year-old was killed by a grenade thrown by a US soldier in a failed rescue attempt.

Award organisers said: "Her death was a great tragedy not only for her family and friends but also for Afghanistan."

Libya: Royal Navy destroy shore-based artillery battery

British Royal Navy warship HMS Liverpool destroyed a Libyan shore battery this week which had opened fire on the ship and its helicopter.

Whilst engaged on surveillance operations off the Libyan coast, the ship was tasked to intercept small, high-speed inflatable boats approaching the port of Misurata, suspected of attempting to mine the harbour.

A Libyan artillery battery on the coast fired rockets at HMS Liverpool whereupon she immediately returned fire with her 4.5-inch (11.5cm) gun, silencing the shore-based aggressors. As a result of the prompt action by HMS Liverpool and her fellow NATO vessels, Colonel Gaddafi's boats were forced to abandon their operation.

Prince Harry targeted by extremist group

A MUSLIM extremist group has placed Prince Harry at the centre of a hate campaign against the Royal Family, it emerged last night.

Muslims Against Crusades have said the Prince’s Afghanistan duty makes him a prime target for their fury.

British Para Commanders face the sack

Three British Parachute Regiment commanders fighting in Afghanistan and one of Britain’s most senior Special Forces officers have been told they could be sacked within months.

The commanding officers of all three Para battalions received letters telling them they were “in the zone for possible redundancy”. One officer heard the news only hours after returning from a patrol fighting the Taliban.

A similar letter was sent to the officer in line to become the next head of Britain’s Special Forces. He fought with the SAS in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The three Para commanders are completing six-month tours in Afghanistan, where one has been shot by insurgents. Another is likely to be decorated for leadership in combat.

Ranger who died fighting Taliban repatriated to UK

The body of a Royal Irish Regiment soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan is due to be repatriated back to the UK Thursday 17th March.

Lance Corporal Stephen McKee (27) from Banbridge died after his armoured vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device during an operation to disrupt the Taliban last Wednesday.

His remains are expected to be flown into RAF Lyneham later this afternoon.

L/Cpl McKee's widow Carley, his parents Heather and Bobby and other relatives are due to make the journey from their home to the Wiltshire airbase for a private ceremony.

They are also expected to join hundreds of people lining the streets of Wootton Bassett as the cortege passes through the market town on its way to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Royal Navy prepare to deploy to Afghanistan

British Royal Navy personnel are preparing to deploy to Afghanistan in April. Able and Leading Medical Assistants will provide support for 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines.

The Military Training Unit (MTU) at the Royal Navy base in Torpoint is providing Navy personnel of all ranks and rates, including medical staff, intensive pre-deployment training.

The Royal Navy is playing a key role supporting operations in Afghanistan. Elements of 845, 846, 847 and 857 Naval Air Squadrons are among the units currently deployed as part of Operation HERRICK 13 to provide airborne surveillance, troop movement and control capabilities.

British Defence chiefs spend over 50 MILLION pounds on VIPs

At a time when 11,000 British troops, many of whom are fighting in Afghanistan, face being made redundant, British Defence chiefs have blown more than £50MILLION hosting VIPs since operations began in Afghanistan.

Civil servants and officers splashed the cash entertaining MPs, Ministers and councillors at lunches, barbecues and lavish black-tie balls.

And foreign bigwigs and their partners are wined and dined on the Navy's ships when they dock at ports around the world.

British MoD save money by paying 22 pounds for a light bulb

At a time when hundreds of British troops fighting in Afghanistan face being made redundant, British Defence chiefs pay £22 EACH for 65p lightbulbs, Army documents seen by The Sun newspaper have revealed.

Dim MoD bosses incredibly also pay £103 each for SCREWS.

The shocking waste is revealed as 11,000 of Our Boys and Girls face the sack, and ships and planes are scrapped, to plug a £38billion deficit.

The public money spent on lightbulbs represents a mark-up of more than 3,000 PER CENT on their true retail value.

British bomb sniffing dog, Theo

A British Army dog that held the record for finding the most bombs and weapons in Afghanistan has died along with his handler in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and Theo, a 22-month-old springer spaniel cross, were killed as they came under small arm fire in the Nahr-e Saraj district in Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

L-Cpl. Tasker, who was from Scotland, was shot dead and the dog Theo died later from a seizure at Camp Bastion, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Theo acted as "front man" of the patrol and was dedicated to L-Cpl Tasker. Theo, had been on his first six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan with the Military Working Dog Support Unit, based at Camp Bastion.

Civilian Medic swaps his ambulance for the frontline

An emergency medical technician from Beccles, UK, has swapped the warmth and comfort of his ambulance for the dangers of the Afghanistan frontline.

Robert Willis is currently working as a frontline medic in the Babaji district, after going to the Helmand Province with the Territorial Army (TA).

The former Notre Dame High School student is responsible for the treatment of the infantry soldiers from C Company 2 SCOTS, who he lives alongside.

Private Willis, 24, is part of the 254 Medical Regiment TA and has been attached to the Colchester-based 16 Close Support Medical Regiment since March 2010.

Brit soldier gets bionic arm

A soldier who lost his arm in a grenade attack in Afghanistan has become the first military amputee to be fitted with a bionic arm.

Corporal Andrew Garthwaite of the Queen's Royal Lancers lost the limb in September in a rocket-propelled grenade attack that killed another soldier.

The 23-year-old was fitted with the device at the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak Hospitals in Birmingham.

Bodies of five soldiers arrive in UK

The bodies of five soldiers who died within a week in Afghanistan were repatriated today - including one who had never met his newborn son.

Private Robert Wood, 28, was one of two men from the Royal Logistics Corp who perished in a blaze at Camp Bastion on February 14.

He had been looking forward to returning home to Marchwood, Hampshire, to see his new son Noah when the tragedy happened.

Brit soldier on front line 7 months pregnant

A British soldier served on the front line in Afghanistan while she was seven months pregnant, it was revealed today.

Sources said Private Kayla Donnelly, 21, did not know she was carrying her baby while fighting in Helmand province from March to September last year.

The machine gunner from 12 Logistic Support only discovered she was pregnant with her son Josh when her contractions began while on holiday in Tenerife.

Grenade Mistake killed British Aid Worker

The grenade that killed kidnapped British aid worker Linda Norgrove in Afghanistan was thrown by the most junior member of the US special forces team sent to rescue her, an inquest in UK has heard.

The operative - identified in court as TM5 - had "genuinely feared for the safety of the lives of his colleagues and himself" when he made the split-second decision to throw the grenade, the inquest's coroner found.
